Herzog, Isaac Halevi

Herzog, Isaac Halevi
(1888-1959)
   Chief rabbi (see Rabbinate of Israel) of Palestine and Israel (1936-59). He was born in Lomza, Russian Poland, and died in Jerusalem. He was educated in England, where he was ordained and attained a doctorate from the University of London. He served as a rabbi in Belfast and became chief rabbi of the Irish Free State in 1925. He was chosen chief rabbi of Palestine in 1936. His son, Chaim Herzog, became a significant figure in the Israel Defense Forces and was elected president of Israel, while his younger son, Ya'acov (Jacob David) Herzog, became an important figure in Israel's foreign policy and political establishment.
